How to pick a smartphone: a beginner’s guide

Like many of you, I’m itching to get my hands on one of those sleek and powerful new Windows Phones we’ve been announcing lately.

But which one to get? I’m not the most hardware-savvy high-tech professional (shhh!), so I’m sometimes uncertain what specs I should look at when I shop for a new phone (beyond “Does it look cool?” and “How’s the camera?”).

So I decided to enlist the help of some hardware geeks around the office and create a beginner’s guide to hardware options and specs. Now, I think I finally know what AMOLED means—and what phone I want to get. Take a look and let me know what you think!

Tech Tuesday Live Twitter Chat - Hot PCs - #win7tech

It’s been a while since we chatted about the hottest PCs on the market and I know you all miss it. So, this week, we are just talking about the different PCs, their different shapes and their variety of features. At CES, all kinds of beautiful PCs were shown off and we took a look at a few in this video here and part 2 here. These are just a few examples of awesome Windows PCs available today. Plus, we’ll also be giving away an ASUS Zenbook UX21. It’s a sleek, sophisticated PC with loads of battery life and one of the PCs favored by @Brandonleblanc. So, join in, learn, share and ask us anything about the PCs you’ve seen on shelves.

Free music Monday!

Many of you know I’m a big music fan, so I got pumped when I heard about a new offer from Windows Phone for some free music. The new Gentleman Hall album has been free the last few weeks, but tomorrow is the last day to download! Head over to the Zune Marketplace on your PC, or just login at Zune.net to stream or download. There are also five free ringtones cut from songs on the new album. I wasn’t familiar with Gentleman Hall, so did a little looking around and found they recently won Billboard’s 2011 "Battle of the Bands," two 2011 Boston Music Awards, and MTV’s Video Music Award for "Best Breakout Boston Artist" - so they’re worth keeping an eye on. And clearly, they are from Boston.

You can see their new video here, which also features your favorite mobile OS, Windows Phone, and a collection of music video production hijinks. Great way to start the week.
